Hundreds of dead fish appeared on Matosinhos beach in the Porto region on Tuesday morning, and the navy is investigating the cause, a navy spokesman told Lusa.
In a conversation with Lusa, a naval spokesman, Commander Sousa Luis, confirmed that “there is a spot of dead fish on Matosinhos Beach” and that at 12:30 there were units of the maritime police of the captaincy of Porto de Leixoins. , go to the place “to find out the reason.”
The warning to the Marine Police came through a “complaint,” he said, adding that it would be necessary to analyze the fish to determine the causes, which are still unknown.
For the spokesman, any reason related to the appearance of dead fish, such as pollution, contaminated water, or the discharge of fish from a ship, is “speculation.”
A bather who was there that morning told Luce that at 11:00 the beach was “with hundreds of dead fish along several meters of beach, next to the sea, where children and adults were swimming.”
He added that “there are a lot of dead fish in the water.”
