On Tuesday, Lumiar’s board criticized the restrictions imposed by Metropolitano de Lisboa’s work in the Lisbon parish and asked for an audience with the environment minister, who oversees the company.
In a statement released on Tuesday, parish council chairman Ricardo Mejia (News Times coalition – PSD/CDS-PP/Aliança/Partido da Terra/PPM) says the community living in Lumiara is being greatly harmed by the construction of the Lisbon Metro Circle Line.
“Luminar has four metro stations, and 75% of the population served by these stations will lose direct access to the city center due to the project under construction – the Circle Line,” he says.
The mayor insists that the new ring line project does not meet the needs and interests of the local population, which represents a “huge loss for all who live, study and work” in this Lisbon parish.
According to Ricardo Mexia, the Parish Council proposed “several alternative solutions” to the Circle Line, “among them the Circle Line,” but all were “ignored by the metro administration and the government.”
The mayor says the works in question are causing traffic restrictions, road cuts, relocation of parking lots and bus stations, and suspension of traffic on the Green and Yellow Lines starting this Tuesday until July 7th.
In a statement released last week, the Metropolitano de Lisboa announced that traffic between Telheiras and Campo Grande (green line) and between Campo Grande and Cidade Universitária (yellow line) will be interrupted from Tuesday to July 7 due to work to expand these lines . .
In a posting on its online page, the company also mentions that the Telheiras station will be closed during this work period.
Ricardo Mexia added that the parish council was asked to improve the walkway that crosses Avenida Padre Cruz between Telleiras and Campo Grande stations “as if it were a real alternative, especially for people with disabilities.”
He pointed out that although these improvements were not a solution, they were made.
The President of the Council said he had asked the Metro de Lisboa about alternative transportation to mitigate the impact on the population affected by the works.
“Therefore, the news of the parish council was of particular surprise that the only alternative would be to strengthen the current funds of Carris, which would be clearly insufficient, but, moreover, it is not even noticeable what kind of strengthening it would be. “, says the mayor.
Declaring that the citizens of Lumiar, and in particular the inhabitants of Tellheiras, would “go out of service for two months, but continue to pay in full” for passes, Ricardo Mejia classified the damage caused to this parish as “unspeakable.” to implement a project “that will only hurt them.”
Therefore, he will ask for an audience with the Minister of the Environment and Fight against Climate Change, Duarte Cordeiro, who oversees the Metropolitan of Lisbon and is responsible for finding a solution.
It is planned to open in 2024 a new ring line that will connect the Rato station with Cais do Sodre, with a length of more than two kilometers of the network, create a ring ring in the center of Lisbon and interfaces that connect and integrate different modes of transport.
