Italian mobster arrested in Portugal during European mega operation

A 62-year-old man of Italian descent was arrested by the Judicial Police (PJ) this Wednesday as part of a European anti-mafia mega-operation called EUREKA.

The suspect, detained in the country, was charged with crimes related to the criminal community, money laundering and drug trafficking. His arrest also resulted in the seizure of evidence, documents, vehicles and about half a million euros, “as well as the seizure of the assets of 9 commercial companies, including 5 catering establishments,” according to PJ.

According to a statement sent to the newsrooms, the mega operation is aimed at taking down a mafia-based criminal organization known as the ‘Ndrangheta, originating in the city of San Luca in Italy.

The ‘Ndrangheta is one of the largest criminal groups in Italy, with links to the First Command of the Brazilian capital. These mafiosi are responsible for transporting and smuggling large quantities of cocaine into Europe, arms trafficking, illegal possession of weapons, fraud and tax evasion, money laundering and corruption.

The criminal network is led by the Calabrian elite, who “for decades have been involved in episodes of violence between clans, with several armed clashes in San Luca, culminating in mass shootings in Italy and abroad, with particular reference to the massacre in Duisburg. , Germany, in 2007,” explains the judicial police.

The police operation takes place in Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Romania, as well as in South America, in countries such as Brazil and Panama. In the national context, police actions took place in Braga, Vila Nova de Gaia, Aveiro and Lisbon.

“Around the world, Operation Eureka resulted in the arrest of 108 suspects linked to the mafia organization,” the source said in a communiqué.
