Eleven people died and 59 were seriously injured in crashes reported by authorities as part of the “Travel Slowly” campaign, which identified more than 14,000 speeding vehicles in one week.
Summing up the results of the campaign, which took place from April 27 to May 3 and which involved the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority (ANSR), the Republican National Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), authorities report that 2,406 were registered accidents resulting in 11 deaths, 59 serious injuries and 754 minor injuries.
Compared to the same period in 2022, there were 126 fewer accidents and 14 fewer minor injuries, but three more deaths and 32 more serious injuries.
The 11 dead, eight of whom were men, were between the ages of 9 and 87.
Nine fatal accidents occurred in the districts of Braga, Vila Real, Porto, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Beja and Faro.
According to the authorities, 2.8 million vehicles were checked with radars during the campaign, 87.1% of which were SINCRO, the National Speed Control System run by ANSR.
Of the vehicles checked, 14,600 were speeding, of which 7,200 were detected by security forces radar and 7,400 by ANSR.
The campaign aimed to warn drivers of the risks of driving too fast, as it is one of the main causes of traffic accidents.
As part of the campaign, 293 drivers and passengers were exposed to messages such as “Speed is the main cause of one third of all fatal accidents” and “On a 10 km trip, drive at 45 km/h or 50 km”. /hour saves only 1 minute and 20 seconds. Travel without haste.”
Four ANSR awareness operations were carried out simultaneously with inspection operations carried out by GNR and PSP in Lisbon, Almeirim, Coimbra and Viseu. Similar actions took place in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira.
