UEFA and the European Space Agency (ESA) today briefed the association on an unprecedented partnership to improve crowd management, the presence of pitches in local life and the impact of football on the environment.
The agreement, concluded before the end of 2025, will allow “spatial innovations in professional football competitions,” the two organizations said in a statement following a meeting held today in Lausanne.
The use of satellite data will help in “monitoring the accumulation of people from space”, identifying “bottlenecks” around sports facilities.
UEFA will have access to existing “history” for specific locations, and communications satellites can keep in touch on the ground, which is often congested when large crowds gather.
According to the statement, the agreement can also help UEFA “determine the benefits that a football stadium brings to local communities” by combining satellite information with socio-economic, meteorological and health data.
