The organizers of the Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Madrid changed the clothes of the ball catchers for the final last Sunday after they were accused of sexism for choosing short skirts for women.
The uniform consisted of a top and a skirt, while the rest of the ballroom boys (men and younger girls) wore more traditional clothes – shorts and a polo shirt. Competition officials select all-female teams to play ball catchers in the men’s games.
The choice was criticized by Spain’s Secretary of State for Equality, Soledad Murillo, who stated that the uniform contributed to “clear discrimination against women”.
In Sunday’s final between Spain’s Carlos Alcaras and Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, a change in form could be seen for the ball pickers, who wore longer shorts.
