Porto Mayor Rui Moreira said this Wednesday that the lower deck of the Luis I Bridge, which connects the city to Gaia, will continue to be used “as is”, i.e. for unhindered traffic and public transport.
“We are going to keep the Luis I bridge deck as it is in use. In fact, the mayor of Gaia is already yesterday [terça-feira] confirmed it. I never said that I have experience. I have always said that this is how it is,” Rui Moreira told reporters at Alfândega do Porto this Wednesday on the sidelines of the presentation of an open tender for the construction of the Ruby Line of the Porto Metro.
The mayor of Porto acknowledged that when the bridge was reopened on 14 April it was a “surprise” because it had not been announced that private cars could not cross the bridge, but said the mayors of Porto and Gaia were also surprised.
“We too were taken by surprise by the opening of the bridge, as you know. We were sure that before the opening of the bridge they were going to paint it. It is, as you know, two-tone, if you notice,” he said. told reporters, sharing that both mayors were convinced they “have a few more months to think about what’s going to happen.”
According to Rui Moreira, they said “the bridge will open” in 36 hours.
“I spoke to the mayor [de Gaia, Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues]“I called him, asked him what he thought, I heard about my services, he heard about his services, we had to decide immediately,” he said.
“I’m sorry, but we really didn’t know that the bridge would be open. Nobody informed us. They forgot,” he told reporters about the work done by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).
On April 14, the lower deck of the Louis I Bridge between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia was reopened to traffic about a year and a half after being closed for restoration work, but only to public transport, bicycles, taxis and pedestrians, not taking into account cars, TVDE and tourist transport.
The cost of the work, initially estimated at €3.3m, ended up at €4.2m, both due to a more complex intervention than expected and a resource crisis linked to the war in Ukraine, according to IP. said Lusa the person in charge of overseeing the work, Joana Moita.
