Wind could again affect traffic at Madeira Airport

ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal has warned that the forecast for stronger winds this Wednesday afternoon and Thursday could once again affect landings and takeoffs at Madeira Airport.

In recent days, Madeira’s Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport has been air-conditioned due to the wind, causing dozens of flights to be cancelled, with others returning to their point of origin or heading to various destinations such as Porto Santo and the Canary Islands.

This morning, the ANA said in a statement, improved conditions allowed “many scheduled flights to operate,” but “IPMA weather forecast [Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera] indicates increased winds from Thursday afternoon and into daylight tomorrow [quinta-feira]so there may be more restrictions on the operation.”

In a note, the company indicates that it has made every effort to “minimize the impact on passengers who, due to a lack of accommodation, have remained in the terminal”, namely by strengthening aid teams, distributing water and some “snacks”.

On the other hand, medical assistance is being provided to passengers with greater health needs, ANA adds.

ANA urges passengers on scheduled flights to check with tour operators and airlines for the status of flights, avoiding trips to the airport and “extra crowds”.

According to the information provided on the official ANA website, traffic at Madeira airport is normal, the last plane, a Transavia flight from Nantes, landed at 18:31.

The Harbor Master of Funchal also extended the high wind warning on the coast of Madeira until 06:00 Thursday.

The warning is based on IPMA forecasts of general weather conditions (wind and sea) along the coast.

According to the captain, the wind will continue to blow from the northeast “fresh to very fresh, strong in places.”
