Thousands of people are expected this Saturday at the Sanctuary of Fatima, at the end of the international commemorative pilgrimage in May, marked by the “return in power of the foot pilgrims” and the presence of World Youth Day symbols.
On Friday, at the usual press conference leading up to the pilgrimage, the rector of the sanctuary, Father Carlos Cabesignas, said that a year ago this pilgrimage no longer had “significant restrictions due to the pandemic, but still with some caution, but the return of pilgrims on foot was not so significant, as was expected”.
However, “this year is different,” admitted the dean.
This pilgrimage also includes two World Youth Day (WYD) symbols: the pilgrimage cross and the icon of Our Lady Salus Populi Romani.
WYD symbols can be found in the Diocese of Leiria-Fatima since April 30, when they completed their visit to the Diocese of Coimbra.
Bishop of Leiria-Fatima and President of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, José Ornelas, highlighted the fact that WYD symbols are present at the celebration, recalling “the urgency of attention to a world that is undergoing rapid and radical change and needs a witness.” faith and a new vision of humanity.
The pilgrimage is led by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, on his visit, which precedes Pope Francis a few weeks later, who will be at WYD in Lisbon from 1 to 6 August. likewise the presence in the Sanctuary of Fatima.
At the same press conference, the cardinal said that he had “many intentions” to present to the Virgin of Fatima, personal, the Church and all mankind, above all “the intention of world peace.”
Another intention of Pietro Parolina concerns young people in connection with WYD, “a meeting in which great hopes are placed”, taking into account the transmission of faith to new generations”, and noting that they “are the bearers of joy and peace”. and therefore they are also part of the solution for the world.”
This Saturday, the pilgrimage concludes with a Eucharistic procession in the prayer hall at 7:00 am, followed by a rosary at 9:00 am and an international mass an hour later.
