A day of contrasts for Joao Almeida (UAE) on stage 8 of the Tour of Italy by bike: he kept 4th overall and the time of the first two, but lost seconds to Roglic – one of the favorites – before the time trial. Sunday (35 km).
A run with two 4th and one 2nd category mountain scores was expected to be quiet. However, on the last climb of the day, Roglic launched an attack that left Remco Evenepul (Soudal, 2nd overall) and Joao Almeida behind. The Jumbo man managed to cross the finish line with a 14 second lead over the two opponents, moving up to third place overall (30 seconds behind Remco and 2 seconds ahead of Almeida).
Irishman Ben Hinley (EF) won the isolated stage. Now the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund (DSM) maintains the lead, which this Sunday should lose. The 35km time trial between Savignano sul Rubicone and Cesena promises to provoke divisions between the favorites and show who is the candidate for the final victory.
