Two men, a Moroccan and a Spaniard, hijacked a semi-rigid boat in Porto de Portimão early this Saturday morning and took it to the Tavira area. The Maritime Police (PM) located and pursued the tourist boat and eventually cornered it in Ribeira de Almargem, in Cabanas de Tavira. In desperation, the two suspects, aged between 30 and 40, decided to put the boat ashore and jumped into the water, fleeing on foot overland. However, at 08:30, the fugitives were intercepted by the Tavira GNR.
The stolen speedboat was supposed to be used for drug trafficking – now a rarity due to the high number of ships hijacked this year – as recently happened with another, also stolen in Portimão, which was eventually seized by the maritime and military – sea fleet. Power in the Algarve. Now the restored boat has two engines of 150 horsepower each. The detainees had no documents. Helder Tapa, the owner of the boat, learned of the theft from the prime minister and said the pier was “unguarded”. Each such boat can cost about half a million euros.
