The plane carried by the queen's coffin

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin arrives at Buckingham Palace in London, Scotland, UK, 13 September 2022

The Royal Air Force flight that carried Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin from Edinburgh to London was one of the most remarkable in history.

More than 5 million people watched the late King’s final flight to London on Tuesday, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.

4.79 million people watched the flight through Flightradar24’s web and mobile app services, and another 296,000 people followed the flight through YouTube live streaming.

The last flight from the Queen of Edinburgh to RAF Northolt became the most watched flight of all time. The previous viewership record was Nancy Pelosi’s flight to Taiwan last month, when about 2.2 million people watched the progress of the US congressman’s flight.

Six million people tried to board the Queen’s plane in the first minute after the plane’s transponder was activated.

Flightradar24 said in a blog post: “This has resulted in unprecedented traffic on the Flightradar24 platform, more than the Speaker of the US House of Representatives experienced when he flew to Taiwan and 2.2 million people they followed the flight. It is.”

Despite mitigations, the website “failed” due to a significant increase in traffic. In the end, around 600,000 users successfully tracked their flights before performance degraded.

The website says it has processed 76.2 million queries related to the Queen’s flight. This includes clicking the flight icons, clicking the aircraft information on the left, and adjusting settings.

Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral last week at the age of 96, ending an impressive reign of more than 70 years.
