Santander reports a cyber attack on its database that affects Spanish clients and the entire workforce

The bank claims that there has been no password theft and that “customers can continue to operate as normal.”

Santander has reported a recent “unauthorized access” to an entity’s database hosted by a provider that has affected clients in Spain, Chile and Uruguay, and all employees and some former employees of the group, as reported in a communicated to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV).

In the rest of the entity’s markets and businesses there is no data on affected customers. Santander points out that in the affected database there is no transactional information or access credentials or internet banking passwords that allow operating with the bank.

“Santander’s operations and systems are not affected and customers can continue to operate safely,” the bank adds.

The bank, which is carrying out an investigation, says it “immediately” implemented measures to manage the incident, including blocking access to the database and strengthening fraud prevention to protect customers.

Santander “regrets” the situation and points out that it is “proactively” informing directly affected customers and employees. “We have promptly notified regulators and law enforcement agencies, and we will continue to collaborate with them,” the statement concludes.
