Brussels has opened infringement proceedings against the tech giant, arguing that they are not “convinced that it has done enough to comply with the obligations of the digital services law.”
The European Comission (CE) opened this Thursday a infringement procedure against Meta because he considers that Facebook and Instagram encourage addiction between minors and that the company has not taken effective measures to remedy it.
“We are not convinced that it has done enough to comply with the obligations of the digital services law to reduce the risks of negative effects on the physical and mental health of young Europeans on its Facebook and Instagram platforms,” it said today. the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
Breton assures that they will analyze “in depth” the operation of both social networks to detect, on the one hand, the possible addictive effects of said platforms and the effectiveness of controls to detect age of the users. In addition, they will examine the level of privacy and security granted to minors in the operation of recommendation systems.
