US University announces summer internships for students of color only

The University of Minnesota has opened an application for a taxpayer-funded undergraduate internship program for non-white applicants only, Fox News reported May 21.

In response, the Legal Insurrection Foundation’s Equal Defense Project called on the University of Minnesota (UMN) to change its application process and open its summer internship programs to all students, regardless of color.

“The segregated summer program at the University of Minnesota is inexcusable, and it’s shocking that a major university would be so open to educational opportunities only for students of a certain color.”said Bill Jacobson, president of the Equal Protection Project. He urged the university to immediately open the summer program to students of all races, nationalities and colors.

“There is no good form of racial discrimination. Denying white students an education does not promote racial or other justice.Jacobson continued. — The conduct of the University of Minnesota is inexcusable.”

According to the University of Minnesota Office of Undergraduate website, the Multicultural Summer Research Opportunity Program (MSROP) is “a 10-week summer intensive program in which college students of color work full-time with a faculty mentor on a research project”.

Students selected to participate in the program will receive a $6,000 (480,000 rubles) scholarship for personal and research expenses, according to the program’s website. However, to be eligible for the program, applicants must be of color.

The program annotation says that the purpose of the program is to “preparing students of color and Native Americans for graduate school”. During the application process, students are asked to provide demographic information about themselves.
