A man suspected of shooting his partner on Sunday in Ribeira Brava, Madeira, will await progress in remand custody, a court source said Tuesday.
On Tuesday, the defendant was subjected to a first interrogation by the judiciary, with a criminal judge ordering pre-trial detention, Filipe Camara, President of Madeira’s Comarca, told Lusa.
The man was “charged with the offense of aggravated murder and the offense of possession of a prohibited weapon in an effective trial,” Filipe Camara said.
A note published on the website of the Madeira District Attorney’s Office mentions that, judging by the steps taken by the Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judicial Police (PJ), “there were evidentiary elements that strongly indicate that the accused shot his companion from a revolver, which he was not allowed to hold because he did not have a license to do so, which led to her death.
The note also states that there was no investigation into “the crime of domestic violence committed by the defendant against the victim.”
On Monday, a PJ source said that the victim of the crime, which took place in the municipality of Ribeira Brava in the western part of the island of Madeira, was 53 years old, while the accused was 49 years old.
