UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday began drafting a code of conduct for digital platforms aimed at regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and curbing disinformation and hate speech online.
Defending that the world must face “serious global damage” caused by the spread of hate and misinformation in the digital space, the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) introduced a set of principles – voluntary compliance for “governments, digital platforms and other stakeholders”, which subsequently will lead to the creation of a code of conduct.
With regard to this code of conduct, Guterres called on governments and technology companies to commit themselves to refrain from supporting or amplifying disinformation and hate speech, and to ensure a free, vibrant, independent and pluralistic press environment with strong protections for journalists.
