The explosion could have occurred near the wreck of the Titanic, where the submersible was heading, Coast Guard officials said at a press conference held after notifying the families of the crew.
“The wreckage is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber,” said Rear Admiral John Mauger of the First Coast Guard District, sending his condolences to the families of the crew.
“It is too early to determine when the tragedy happened, when it happened. At this time, we express our condolences to the families. We want them to be able to understand what happened,” Rear Admiral John Mauger said.
