This Monday, an international center opened at Eurojust headquarters in The Hague to support litigation against high-ranking Russian leaders in connection with alleged crimes of aggression resulting from the invasion of Ukraine.
The International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine is the latest step in a concerted global effort to bring the Russian leadership to justice for the war against Ukraine.
The center is located at the headquarters of the European Judicial Cooperation Agency, Eurojust, in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said on Monday that the new body is “a clear sign that the world is united and unshakable to hold the Russian regime accountable for all the crimes it has committed.”
However, he added, “Unfortunately, there is a gap in the architecture of international criminal justice regarding accountability for the crime of aggression.”
The European Union’s Executive Committee is funding the initiative, agreeing this Monday to provide an initial financial support of 8.3 million euros.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating crimes in Ukraine and has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, holding him personally responsible for kidnapping children in Ukraine.
