Open Arms rescues 300 migrants in a day in the Mediterranean, and will disembark on Sunday in Brindisi

The ship of the NGO Open Arms has rescued in just 24 hours 300 migrants in various operations, and is now heading to the port of Brindisi, in the Apulia region (southern Italy), where the Italian authorities have given it permission to disembark.

“After a complicated day of operations coordinated by the Italian authorities, the Open Arms heads to the port of brindisiwhere it will arrive on Sunday afternoon”, the NGO reported today on its social networks.

According to Open Arms, “on board there are 300 people, many unaccompanied minorstwo pregnant women and a five-year-old child.

This is one of the toughest days for the NGO that left a few days ago for what is its 101st rescue mission, since they had to rescue six barges in a few hours.

During Thursday morning he had located the first of these barges, wooden and driftingwith about a hundred people on board, including 9 women and 15 unaccompanied minors.

According to the NGO, the group left Libya three days ago and its members come from Eritrea, Sudan, Syria and Ethiopia.

Shortly after, he rescued the 17 migrants from another boat in terrible condition, including a woman with health problems.

So far this year, according to data updated to July 5 from the Ministry of the Interior, 66,741 migrants have arrived on the Italian coast compared to 29,670 in the same period last year.
