This measure aims to achieve more responsible behavior and safer driving for citizens. The government coalition of conservatives and greens announced the change in legislation.
“At the speeds we’re talking about here, no one can fully control their vehicle. The car becomes an unguided weapon and is a danger to completely innocent people,” Transport Minister Leonora Gewessler of the Greens told a media conference. .
Those who are caught committing an offense for the second time or driving at a speed, especially exceeding the legal speed, will have their vehicles confiscated and auctioned off.
Last year, Austria also introduced a measure to revoke the driver’s license of drivers who excessively exceeded the speed limit.
