The body of a mountaineer who has been missing since 1986 has surfaced after a glacier melted in Switzerland as a result of climate change.
The discovery was made this month on the Theodul Glacier. Valais police said the missing climber was German and was 38 years old at the time of his death.
The body was discovered by climbers who noticed hiking boots and crampons emerging from the ice.
Only later did DNA analysis show that the body belonged to a German who had been missing for 37 years.
At that time, a large-scale search and rescue operation was carried out by the man, but no traces were found.
Until the police named the climber.
The Theodul glacier is part of the Zermatt region, which is considered the highest mountain in Europe and is famous for its skiing activities that take place all year round.
Every summer, the melting ice reveals that something or someone has been missing for decades. In 2022, the wreckage of a plane that crashed in 1968 was also found in Switzerland.
In 2014, a helicopter pilot delivering supplies to the Matterhorn in Switzerland discovered the body of British climber Jonathan Conville. Its whereabouts have been unknown since 1979.
In 2015, it was the turn to find two Japanese climbers who went missing in 1970.
