Ireland awaits postponement of UK border checks

The long-awaited postponement of the introduction of food and animal product checks at the UK border has pleased Irish exporters, Irish Exporters Association chief Simon McKeever said on August 12, writes The Irish Independent.

“Overall this is good for Irish exporters, he said. — Anything that helps the free flow of exports from Ireland to the UK is good news.”

However, he noted that Irish companies again face uncertainty on this issue, as no official postponement of the introduction of inspections has yet been announced. Checks must begin on or after October 31.

In the first stage, it is planned to require sanitary certificates from exporters of food, animals and plants, then it was planned to introduce high-risk inspections of plant products.

Experts believe that the postponement will happen.

“Every time there was talk of a delay, there was a delay”, – Brian Murphy, a customs specialist with Globaltrade.ie advisers, commented on the situation. He also drew attention to the lack of practical progress on this issue, despite the fact that there is little time left before the introduction of the controls.

It should be noted that Irish exporters would also welcome any delay in introducing freight control fees, which should range from £20 (2,500 rubles) to £43 (5,400 rubles) per consignment.

The British government said that “Reflecting on the valuable feedback provided by a number of companies and industry stakeholders and will soon be publishing a Border Destination Operating Model (BTOM)”according to which the checks should be carried out.

Remember that British farmers, by contrast, have been facing inspections of their produce entering the EU for almost two years.
