The provincial government of Luanda has banned motorcycles from some of the capital’s main roads in an effort to improve traffic and reduce accidents, which totaled 768 in the first half of the year.
Crashes caused by mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles have left 134 people dead and 725 injured, of whom 368 were serious, according to figures released on Tuesday by Superintendent Simão Saulo, head of the Luanda Provincial Department of Traffic and Road Safety.
The Luanda Provincial Government (GPL) on Tuesday took measures to “improve car traffic on city center roads”, including a ban on mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles and quads on the main streets and avenues of Luanda’s municipalities. , Viana, Kakuako, Talatona, Kilamba Kiaksi, Belas and Kazenga.
Motorcycles are one of the most popular means of transportation in Luanda and are also used to transport passengers, a motorcycle taxi service known as “kupapata”.
These measures were presented at a press conference by LPG Legal and Exchange Director Edson Cesar and justified by the growing number of motorcycle taxi drivers working in Luanda and the traffic accidents they are involved in.
It also banned parking of heavy vehicles on several streets and redefined the hours of heavy vehicles, which now run only from 21:00 to 5:00, from Monday to Friday and from 12:00. Saturdays until 12:00, Mondays until 05:00.
