The morning-after pill will be free for all women in the French State

The so-called “morning after pill” will be free in France from next year for all women, who will not need a prescription to request it at a pharmacy, a way of facilitating access to emergency contraception.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Health, François Braun, who in an interview with the newspaper 20 minutes has justified it as a measure “to combat difficulties in accessing emergency contraception, since it is known to be most effective in the 24 hours following a relationship that poses a risk of pregnancy”.

The provision, which will appear in the Social Security budget for 2023, involves expanding the current device, which allows underage girls to request this contraceptive method free of charge and without a prescription.

Braun has also indicated that medical check-ups for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases will be free, and without the need for a medical prescription, for all young people up to 26 years of age, which is the most affected population group.
