Former President of the Italian Republic Giorgio Napolitano has died

Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Italian Republic for two consecutive terms (2006-2015), died this Friday at the age of 98 at the Spallanzani Hospital in Rome, where he had been hospitalized for several days due to health complications, the national newspaper reported. press.

Born in Naples in 1925, Napolitano, who had undergone several operations in recent years, resigned in 2015 after almost ten years as head of state, becoming the first president of the Italian Republic to be re-elected to a second term.

Before assuming the presidency, Giorgio Napolitano, who turned 98 on June 29, was president of the Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of the Italian parliament), interior minister, member of the European Parliament and senator.
