Six people died from electric shocks and several businesses caught fire as a result of a short circuit in a high-voltage line in the city of Jos (Plateau State, Nigeria) on the night of October 14, reports Daily Trust.
The incident occurred around 2:00 local time (4:00 Moscow time), when people were sleeping. A high-voltage wire fell from a pole and shorted another line, causing a power surge and electrocuting people in their homes.
Furthermore, because the electrical appliances were not turned off, a fire broke out in which several people were injured and several shops were completely burned down.
District youth leader Sylvanus Boniface said the dead were taken to the morgue and the injured to hospitals. He said it was a miracle he survived because he received a strong electric shock when he woke up and tried to unscrew the light bulb.
“Stores burned because people left their appliances on. Especially by beverage vendors who put their drinks in refrigerators and leave them on to keep them cold.”Boniface said.
The state police department recommended citizens always turn off electrical appliances when not in use or before going to bed.
