The Finnish border guard announced this Saturday that queues have been registered to access the country at some border crossings with Russia, after Helsinki announced its decision to block the entry of Russian tourists.

“The border traffic last night was heavier than usual and there are queues at the Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa and Imatra border crossings“, the border guard reported on his Twitter account.

In total, throughout Friday they entered Finland from Russia 6,998 Russian citizenswhich represents an increase of 88% compared to the same day of the previous week, when 3,714 people did so.

“I am afraid of being mobilized, I don’t want to participate in this warso I decided to escape,” a Russian citizen interviewed by Finnish public television Yle said at the border on Saturday, adding that he wanted to enter Finland to go to Germany, where he planned to spend some time with friends.

Although there are no official data to confirm that the majority of newcomers are fleeing the partial mobilization decree announced on Wednesday by Moscow, everything indicates that the increase in border traffic is related to this event.

With air and rail connections severed by the European sanctions against Moscowthousands of Russians continue to arrive in Finland by road, most of them crossing the four border posts in southeastern Finland (Vaalimaa, Nuijamaa, Imatra and Niirala), close to Saint Petersburg.
