The fire that broke out this Thursday at a factory in Gandara dos Olivais, municipality of Leiria, and forced the evacuation of a kindergarten and several houses, has entered the liquidation stage, a civil protection source told Lusa.
“At 13:44 the fire entered the liquidation stage,” said a source in the subregional command for emergencies and civil protection of the Leiria region, noting that there were no casualties.
According to the website of the National Office of Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, the fire alarm was raised at 11:50 a.m. and 64 operators, supported by 26 vehicles, responded to the scene.
The fire led to the evacuation of a kindergarten and some houses as a precaution due to the smoke, explained the commander of the subregional emergencies and civil defense of the Leiria region, Carlos Guerra.
The fire occurred at Compogal Indústria de Polímeros, SA, a company founded in 1987 that aims to recycle plastic materials, according to its website.
Leiria Chamber reported on the social network Facebook that “one of the industry pavilions is engulfed in flames, but the company will be able to continue its activities.”
The municipality explained that, as a precautionary measure, due to the fire at the polymer and solvent production plant, “the Gândara dos Olivais kindergarten and three buildings were evacuated.”
“Seventy children were taken to the district day center and their return to evacuated homes is still being assessed by authorities,” he said.
The operatives present at the scene belonged to the municipal fire department, security agents, the Municipal Civil Protection Service and the E-Redes company.
“The municipal environmental supervision service is monitoring the existing water supply line in the area to monitor possible consequences,” the same publication said, adding that Mayor Gonçalo López and Civil Protection Councilor Luis López are also monitoring the situation. .
