A U.S. Navy plane flying in the rain Tuesday overshot the runway of a military base on Hawaii Island and crashed into the waters of Kaneohe Bay, but all nine passengers on board were uninjured.
The Coast Guard responded to the accident, but rescue efforts were quickly canceled because there was no need to help the passengers.
Authorities have not yet provided information about the cause of the accident.
A photograph taken by an eyewitness shows the plane resting in the water just offshore, reminiscent of the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson,” when a passenger plane piloted by Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger made an emergency landing in New York City. York River.
The P-8A involved in Tuesday’s crash and the Airbus A320 Sullenberger was piloting are about the same size.
The P-8A is often used for submarine hunting and military reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. It is manufactured by Boeing.
