On November 23, a plant for the production of proteins from black soldier flies with a capacity of 10 thousand tons per year was inaugurated in Vietnam, reports the online publication The Fish.
The co-founders and co-directors of the Vietnamese company Entobel, Alexander de Caters and Gaetan Krilaard, said at the opening: “Today marks a milestone in transforming the insect protein landscape and providing sustainable food ingredients to the aquaculture and animal feed industry.”.
The facility has 50 robotic vertical farming units. Sensors and data analysis help improve productivity. Entobel raised $33 million (2.9 billion rubles) in 2022 to build a plant in Vung Tau. This is Entobel’s second production facility in Vietnam. The plant employs 150 people.
Protein consumption is projected to increase by approximately 75% by 2050 due to global population growth. Aquaculture, the fastest growing animal protein industry in the world, can meet this need.
According to the European Commission, the average annual production of fishmeal is five million tonnes. Insect protein will compensate for the lack of fishmeal and preserve the biodiversity of the world’s oceans.
The company chose Vietnam to expand for three main reasons:
1. Vietnam’s tropical climate is ideal for the black soldier fly and reduces operating and capital costs.
2. Vietnam is one of the largest aquaculture centers in the world.
3. A stable supply of high-quality raw materials for the cultivation of fly larvae is maintained.
Entobel expects to continue its expansion in Vietnam, followed by its expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia.
