The US and the EU condemn the annexation of Ukrainian territories and announce sanctions on Russia

The West has firmly rejected the annexation of four Ukrainian territories to Russia. NATO has shown a “firm commitment” to the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.” China, for its part, has not recognized the annexation.

The United States and the European Union have condemned the annexation of four Ukrainian territories to Russia, and have announced new sanctions in response.

US President Joe Biden has proclaimed that “the attempted annexation violates international law, tramples on the United Nations Charter and shows his contempt for peaceful nations around the world.”

Similarly, the European Union has “firmly condemned the illegal annexation“, and added that Ukraine “has the right to defend itself and continue fighting for its liberation and recovery.”

NATO, likewise, has shown a “firm commitment” with the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine”.

Countries Moldova and Georgia they have also condemned Putin’s decision, defending that the votes were “false” and “organized at gunpoint”.

China, Putin’s main ally, has not recognized the annexationand has not commented on it either.

New sanctions

In response to Putin’s annexation, the West has shown a willingness to impose new sanctions on Russia.

America has talked about visa restrictionstogether with economic sanctions.

The EU, for its part, has shown its willingness to give the green light to a new package of sanctions, the eighth since the beginning of the Russian invasion. This round includes a new cap on the price of oil, sanctions against Russian leaders and the prohibition of European citizens from being able to form part of the boards of directors of Russian public companies, among others.
