Florida authorities have confirmed that at least 23 people have lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Ian in Florida. However, that figure could increase considerably, because according to the count of the CNN television network, the number of deceased rises to 45almost double.

The Florida Medical Examiners Commission has reported that the victims have between 22 and 92 years oldand most of them show signs of drowning.

The bodies were found floating in flooded streets and on the beach, as well as in some cases inside vehicles.

The weather phenomenon, which made landfall in Florida last Wednesday as a category four hurricanehas caused strong winds, rain and storm surge.

The United States Coast Guard has carried out during this week 275 rescue operations throughout the state. “We are flying and we are operating in areas that are unrecognizable. Buildings that were once landmarks in the community are gone,” a member of the force said.

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has assured that Ian could be the “deadliest” hurricane in Florida state historywhich has already been declared a catastrophic area.

In the last few hours, Ian has lost strength as he passes through South Carolina, and he already considers himself a tropical cyclone.
