The leader of the Workers’ Party has obtained 48.39% of the votes, while the far-right has achieved 43.23%. The victory is tighter than the polls predicted, so the uncertainty is greater ahead of the second round on October 30.

Former Brazilian president and leader of the Workers’ Party, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaand the current president, Jair Bolsonarowill compete for the Presidency on October 30 in the second round of the elections, after having been a very short distance away in the elections this Sunday.
The result of the first round —Lula 48.3% and Bolsonaro 43.2%— it has been a lot tighter of what the voting intention polls anticipated, which placed the former president 14 points above the leader of the extreme right and even contemplated the possibility that he could exceed half of the votes.
At the end of the count, Lula It has fallen less than two points (4.7 million votes) from a victory in the first round, but the victory has had a certain bitter taste due to the unexpected show of force of Bolsonarism both at the national and regional levels.
After knowing the results, a smiling Lula has affirmed that he will win in the second round and has shown confidence that he will return to the head of state that he held between 2003 and 2010.
However, aware that the victory was tighter than expected, Lula has put it in perspective and has recalled what happened in 2018, when he followed the elections from prison, convicted of corruption.
“To assess what is happening today, you have to remember what was happening four years ago. I was seen as if I were a human being outside of politics,” Lula said.
Bolsonaroon the other hand, has addressed the press in Brasilia with a serious gesture, acknowledging that there is a “will for change” in the electorate, although he has expressed confidence in victory on October 30.
One of the unknowns on the day was whether the leader of the extreme right would recognize the result if he did not win the elections, after having led a systematic campaign to question the reliability of the electoral system.
Commenting on the results, he has not put them in doubt nor has he attacked the electoral system again, but he has taken the opportunity to reiterate his distrust of the polls.
