In the case of Kherson and Zaporizhia, the Kremlin will consult the population to define what their borders will be. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s counteroffensive continues to retake the territories occupied by Russia, making its way into the province of Kherson.
The Russian Duma or Chamber of Deputies ratified this Monday unanimously the annexation to Russia of the Ukrainian territories of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, partially occupied by Russian troops and after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared last week that they were already part of Russia’s territory.
Although the annexation documents were signed on Friday, the Duma had not yet ruled on the matter. Now, the borders of these territories will become the external borders of Russia, according to these treaties.
The spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov He has indicated that he will consult the population of Kherson and Zaporizhia, to define what their borders will be. According to the Kremlin representative, Russia recognizes the borders of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, based on those established in 2014, when the Ukrainian conflict began, while in Kherson and Zaporizhia “we will continue to consult the population of these regions”.
The regions in question will become republics –in the case of Donetsk and Lugansk– and regions –in the case of Kherson and Zaporizhia–, all of them with heads of government who will receive the status of governor.
Russian troops also retreat in southern Ukraine, although kyiv asks for caution
Ukraine’s counteroffensive to retake Russian-occupied territories is making its way into Kherson province, one of four territories annexed last week by the Kremlin.
Russia has recognized the advance of the ukrainian army in the annexed Kherson region, in the south of the country, where it has managed to break through some Russian defensive lines and has forced Russian and pro-Russian forces to withdraw to new defense positions
“The enemy has managed to penetrate our defense in the direction of Zolota Balka and Oleksandrivka with numerically superior tank units,” Russian defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. Both towns are located about 130 kilometers northeast of the city of Jersón.
