The Constitutional Council (CC) of Mozambique will announce this Saturday the results of the repeat municipal elections held on December 10 in four municipalities in the country, the institute announced this Friday.
The announcement of the results by the Constitutional Court, the final appellate body of the electoral process, will be made in Maputo by President Adviser Lucia Ribeiro, but it has once again been marked by criticism from the opposition and civil society, with accusations of election fraud similar to the first vote on October 11.
A total of 53,270 voters were called upon to repeat voting in 75 polling stations on December 10 to elect new mayors in four municipalities in Mozambique.
The repeat voting on 11 October took place in 18 polling stations in Nacala Porto (Nampula province), three in Milange and 13 in Gurué (Zambezia), as well as in all 41 polling stations in Marromeu (Sofala), the four municipalities where elections are taking place. was not approved by the Constitutional Council of Mozambique due to irregularities.
According to the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Mozambique, repeating the local elections cost 41 million meticais (595 thousand euros).
The election commission said polling station officials involved in illegal activities in the Oct. 11 election have been barred from voting again.
The October elections were strongly contested by the opposition and civil society, who condemned the alleged “mega-fraud”.
On 24 November, the Central Committee of Mozambique declared the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) the winner of the 11 October municipal elections in 56 municipalities against the previous 64 declared by the CNE, with Renamo winning four, and ordered elections to be repeated in four others.
According to the ruling, approved unanimously and read by the president of the Constitutional Court, Counselor Judge Lucia Ribeiro, Frelimo maintained its victory in the country’s two main cities, Maputo and Matola, in which Renamo claimed victory, despite cutting some 60,000 people. votes – the total number of votes allocated to the party in power.
