Energy and defense are the main points of the action plan that Spain and Germany agreed on Wednesday in the 25th Bilateral Summitheld in A Coruña.
The head of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, have demanded the construction of the Midcat gas pipeline so that it will be operational in the year 2025. In addition, they have urged all the parties involved to negotiate. In this way they have increased the pressure on the President of France, Emmanuel Macronmain detractor of the project.
The summit, which was attended by 15 ministers from both cabinets, served to once again highlight the good diplomatic relations and the interest of the two executives in continuing to strengthen them and working in different areas of collaboration.
In the joint declaration of the summit, as well as in the action plan that accompanies it, both countries insist on several occasions on their strong commitment to the EU and NATO“essential” organizations of a “peaceful and secure” world order.
In addition to expressing its support for Ukraine, the focus is on three aspects, such as the economic protection of citizens and the guarantee of their security and defense.

Both countries agree on the importance of reinforcing cooperation in the area of arms and the defense industry in order to strengthen European capabilities in this area.
That if, Sánchez has clarified that he has not discussed with the chancellor the missile shield raised by Germany, although it has clarified that the Executive will study it “when it is the subject of debate”.
The defense, once again, of energy interconnections, with an eye on renewable hydrogen and in clear reference to the gas pipeline through the Pyrenees (the so-called MidCat) and a European electricity market, are also points of the agreement.
They point out that the construction of a gas pipeline that crosses the Pyrenees is of “crucial importance”, since this is the way to achieve a “true and robust” internal energy market in the European Union, accelerate the green transition and reinforce autonomy EU strategy.
In this sense, they add that they will continue pressing to increase the energy interconnection of the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe to increase its contribution to the security of supply throughout the European Union. At this point they mention that this infrastructure is relevant for electrical interconnection and especially for transporting green hydrogen.
