PGR Cape Verde says PJ director’s statement about attackers ‘is not a complaint’

The Office of the Prosecutor General (PGR) of Cape Verde this Friday considered that the statement by the Director of the Judicial Police (PJ) about the infiltrates of public institutions that support the commission of crimes “does not constitute a complaint.”

“The Code of Criminal Procedure provides that when a crime is reported, an investigation begins. The statement of the national director of the SP is not a complaint. It is a statement in a speech,” the DPR said in response to questions raised by Lusa.

In any case, “the law prohibits the prosecutor’s office from reporting the presence or absence of cases under investigation under penalty of violating judicial secrecy,” he concluded.

Also this Friday, the office of the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, responded to Lusa that “the director of the joint venture himself should comment on this issue and clarify possible doubts.”

On Tuesday, in his speech after being sworn in as the new director of the SP, Manuel da Lomba warned of the existence of “infiltrators” in government institutions who support the commission of crimes, without further detail.

“In times of crisis, there is always a window of opportunity for the world of crime, and with this in mind, we cannot ignore the fact that crime is becoming increasingly organized, complex and transnational, with resources, technology and know-how available.” with the support of people who have infiltrated government institutions, which, unfortunately, we encounter every day in the fight against crime,” he said.

The director of the joint venture reminded that the state is huge, that crime has nothing to do with the position but with the person, and that it can range from drug use to other illegal activities such as influence peddling or corruption.

Therefore, he understood that he should not be naive and that it was necessary to invest in preventing these crimes.

At the same inauguration ceremony, Justice Minister Joana Rosa responded that she was not aware of specific cases, following a speech by the new head of Cape Verde’s criminal police, who is also a public prosecutor.
