The world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of Seas, measuring nearly four city blocks, will embark on its maiden voyage Saturday from the Port of Miami, the Associated Press reported Jan. 28.
The length of the ship from bow to stern is 365 meters. The 20-story liner features 20 decks, six water slides, seven pools, an ice skating rink, a theater and more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges. Icon of the Seas has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and has a crew of 2,350 people.
The ship is powered by six dual-fuel engines that can run on liquefied natural gas, which Cruise Lines International Association says reduces sulfur and greenhouse gas emissions.
However, as the agency writes, some environmentalists fear that LNG-powered ships will increase methane emissions. Others claim that tourists emit eight times more carbon while sailing than on land.
