All areas of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning on Thursday due to the forecast for at times heavy rain, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
In addition to the rain, strong winds and rough seas are also expected in the coming days on the Portuguese mainland and Madeira.
A yellow rain warning for 18 districts will be in effect from 3pm to 9pm on Thursday.
The areas of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are again under a yellow warning from 09:00 to 15:00 on Friday due to rain.
The IPMA also issued an orange warning for Porto, Viana do Castelo and Braga from 12:00 to 18:00 on Thursday due to disturbances at sea, which then changed to yellow, with the latter lasting until 6:00.
The areas of Faro, Setubal, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro and Coimbra will also be under a yellow warning due to sea conditions until 06:00 Saturday.
The Institute has also issued a yellow warning for Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Faro, Vila Real, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga due to the south/south forecast -west wind. with gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour (kph) in the highlands.
A yellow wind warning will be in effect Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The IPMA also placed the Madeira archipelago under a yellow warning for south-westerly winds gusting to 80 km/h, gusting to 100 km/h in the highlands from 9am to 6pm on Thursday.
The southern coast and mountainous areas of Madeira will also be under a yellow warning on Thursday (09:00 to 15:99) due to occasional heavy rainfall.
An orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation” and a yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
The cause of the weather changes on the Portuguese mainland and the Madeira Archipelago is the Carlota Depression.
According to the IPMA, “This depression is part of a complex dual-core depression system that is evolving into a single core that will be located southwest of Ireland.”
The depression has an associated cold frontal surface, and starting Thursday it is this front that will affect mainland Portugal.
The change in weather begins to be felt this Wednesday with light rain, especially in the northern and central regions, and the wind increases from midday.
