The price of vegetables in Delhi, the Indian capital, may increase after the start of farmers’ protests, NDTV reports on February 17.
A trader reported a four-rupee price increase in carrots in the last 15 days due to supply issues from Punjab. He expressed concern that further disruption caused by the ongoing protests could lead to an increase in prices of other vegetables.
Speaking about the possible impact on vegetable prices due to closure of roads due to ongoing farmers’ protests, another vegetable trader from Ghazipur Mandi in Delhi said: “Currently this has no effect on vegetable prices. If the protests continue and there is more congestion on the roads, the supply of vegetables from the regions of Uttar Pradesh, Ganganagar, Pune, etc. will decrease. “could be affected, which would cause a possible increase in the prices of some vegetables.”
Farmers from Punjab began their march towards the national capital on Tuesday but were stopped by security personnel at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana.
Protesting farmers have been setting up tents at the border points since the march began.
Hundreds of farmers and several journalists were injured when protesters clashed with police as they tried to tear down multi-layered barricades.
The third round of talks with the central government stalled on Thursday amid a clash between protesters and security personnel on the Punjab-Haryana border. The next round of negotiations will take place on Sunday.
