Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazwani said African countries should have a permanent representative on the UN Security Council, TASS reports on February 17.
Ghazwani made a statement on the permanent membership of African countries in the UN Security Council upon assuming office as president of the African Union.
“Now we are part of the G20, we need to work to change the UN system to be able to get a seat on the Security Council. We will make efforts for this.”– he said.
Let us remember that the UN Security Council includes 15 countries of the world, of which 5 (Russia, Great Britain, China, the United States and France) are permanent members and 10 are non-permanent members, which are elected every two years. .
Previously, Antonio Guterres, head of the UN, stated that the majority of the organization’s countries recognize the need to reform the Security Council. However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the UN Security Council should be expanded not at the expense of Western countries, but at the expense of representatives from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
