Taiwan launches program to attract middle-aged people to work

Taiwan launches program to attract middle-aged people to work

The Taiwanese government has developed a program to encourage middle-aged people to return to work, CNA reported on February 17.

The program is valid for legal retirees over 45 years of age and for unemployed people aged 55 and over. If they go to work, they receive an additional $957.

The retirement age on the island is 65 years. However, people can retire earlier. For example, after having worked for 25 years. Or at age 55, if you have already worked for 15 years.

To qualify for the payment, a person must be out of work for at least three months, apply through an employment agency, obtain a job through a referral and work for at least 90 days. After that, you can receive $957 if you work full-time or half that amount if you work part-time.

You will only be able to receive a subsidy after returning to work twice. The program began on February 1, although it was only presented now.

According to experts from Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor, about 60,000 people can benefit from the program each year.

According to the ministry, as of December 2023, the labor force participation rate between 55 and 59 years old on the island is 61.78%. For ages 50 to 54 it is 77.68%.

Let us remember that population aging is a serious problem for Taiwan. The island’s leaders see hiring immigrants from abroad as one of the ways to solve this problem. The working-age population is declining amid falling birth rates and an aging population.

The government intends to focus on three areas to address the problem: increasing the search for highly qualified foreign white-collar professionals, attracting and retaining more foreign students, especially those of Chinese origin, and attracting and retaining migrant workers who are simultaneously studying in Taiwan. , including university.
