A huge explosion damages the Kerch bridge linking Russia with Crimea

The kerch bridgeone of the main connection routes between Russia and Crimea, was seriously damaged early this Saturday as a result of a huge explosion attributed first to the explosion of a truck that immediately afterwards caused the chain detonation of at least seven tanks of fuel transported by rail, according to the Russian authorities, with no record of casualties at the moment.

“Investigators from the Russian Investigative Committee are establishing all the circumstances of the incident and the people involved in the crime,” the Kremlin-dependent agency wrote on its official Telegram channel.

The bridge, also known simply as the Crimean Bridge, is considered to be a important logistics supply route for Russian forces in Crimea and southern Russian-occupied Ukraine. The structure, 19 kilometers long, includes a rail transport route and a motorway. Inaugurated by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018, it is one of the most important infrastructure works on the peninsula since it was incorporated into Russia in 2014.

According to the head of the Crimean Government, Sergei Aksionov, after the explosion two sections of the highway have collapsed. Due to the damage, all car and truck traffic has been suspended and a ferry service has been set up to transport the population across the Kerch Strait, where shipping lanes remain operational for the time being.

The Russian National Antiterrorist Commission has attributed the start of the chain of explosions to the explosion of a truck that “provoked the chain ignition of seven fuel tanks on a train moving in the direction of the Crimean peninsula,” according to a statement collected by the TASS agency.

Although the Crimean Government Headquarters have not yet indicated the exact reasons for the incident, the President of the Crimean Council of State, Vladimir Konstantinov, has already accused Ukraine of what happened.

“The ukrainian hooligans they have arrived with blood on their hands at the Crimean bridge. Now they have something to be proud of: for 23 years of their management they have not managed to build anything worthy of attention in Crimea, but they managed to damage the Russian bridge. This is the whole essence of the kyiv regime. Death and destruction is the only thing they get,” he wrote on his Telegram account.

Ukraine celebrates

Ukraine has celebrated what happened, but without clarifying at any time an alleged responsibility, according to statements collected by the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform.

The Ukrainian air force today reported on its Telegram account of the “destruction” of the bridge: “This morning on the Crimean bridge. Fuel tanks are on fire. Part of the roadway was also destroyed! Everything will be Ukraine !”, says the message of the

Zaporizhia nuclear power plant switched off

On the other hand, the authorities of Ukraine and Russia have confirmed this Saturday that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has once again been disconnected from the electricity grid after recent night bombings of which both countries have again accused each other.

The Ukrainian government estimates that the plant will only be able to function in this way for ten days.

The plant, the largest in Europe and currently under the control of the Russian military, was last disconnected from the electricity grid on September 5.
