Affonso Celso Pastore, economist and former Central Bank president, dies

According to Globo, Affonso Celso Pastore, former president of Brazil and economist of the Central Bank, died this Wednesday at the age of 84 in Sao Paulo.

According to the publication, the economist was hospitalized for surgery on Saturday, but after spending the weekend in the space department, he could not resist.

Affonso received a doctorate in economics from the University of Sao Paulo and was president of the Central Bank between 1983 and 1985 during the reign of former President Joan Figueiredo, the last of the military dictatorship.

During his tenure participated in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over Brazil’s external debt, facing a period of high inflation.

In 1993, he also founded the consulting firm AC Pastore & Associados, specializing in the analysis of Brazilian and international economies.
