Authorities in the US state of Maine allowed Trump to participate in the primaries

Maine Secretary of State Shanna Bellows has decided to cancel her decision to remove former US President Donald Trump from the local primary election, as the Maine Department of State website reported on March 4.

Bellows said in a statement that he made the decision taking into account the US Supreme Court decision that allowed Trump to participate in the primary.

Bellows previously removed Trump from the Republican primary after the Colorado Supreme Court in late December barred Trump from participating in local elections for Republican candidates for the US presidential nomination.

In turn, Donald Trump filed an appeal and obtained a decision from the United States Supreme Court. It was issued on March 4, one day before the Colorado primary, scheduled for March 5.

Trump’s ban on participating in the primaries was based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which states that one cannot hold office in the service of the United States or a state if a person, having taken an oath, “participated in a mutiny or rebellion” against the United States. In his decision, the United States Supreme Court took into account that Donald Trump did not call for an attempt to take over the United States Congress on January 6, 2021, but rather spoke out against violence.
