The Portuguese embassy in Moscow on Friday urged Portuguese people in the country to avoid “places with large crowds of people” following warnings issued by several Western countries of possible terrorist attacks in Russia in the coming days.
“Following information about the recent neutralization of an attempted terrorist attack in Moscow, the Portuguese Embassy in the Russian Federation urges Portuguese citizens to exercise special caution, repeating the recommendations on this page to avoid places with large crowds of people,” you can read in a note published on the Community Portal.
In a message published this Saturday on the portal of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, the Portuguese Embassy in Moscow also recalled that “the recommendation to Portuguese citizens not to travel to the Russian Federation remains in force.”
Embassies of several European countries warned this Saturday of possible terrorist attacks in Russia in the coming days, following similar warnings from the US and UK.
In a message posted on its website, the US Embassy initially said extremist groups had “imminent plans to attack” large crowds in Russia and asked its citizens to avoid crowded places.
The British Embassy also posted a notice online and said it was monitoring the situation.
Subsequently, other embassies, such as Germany, the Netherlands and Latvia, asked their citizens to take additional security measures given the risk of attacks.
The diplomatic missions did not provide any other information about possible attacks.
This Friday, numerous events dedicated to Women’s Day, which is a public holiday in Russia, took place without incident.
Local authorities have not yet commented on information about possible attacks released by embassies.
