Director Christopher Nolan says he doesn’t think “desperation is the answer to the nuclear problem”

Director Christopher Nolan, winner of a major Oscar this morning, found the response to his film Oppenheimer “remarkable” and said the response to nuclear proliferation should be one of activism, not despair.

“The film ends with what I think is a necessary dramatic moment of despair,” the director said in an interview room backstage at the Oscars, where Lusa was present.

“But I don’t really think despair is the answer to the nuclear problem,” he says. “If we look at the nonproliferation work done by organizations and individuals since 1945, the number of nuclear weapons on the planet has decreased by almost 90% since 1967.

The director believes that in recent years the problem has been moving in the wrong direction and “it is important that instead of despair, people look towards activity and pressure to reduce the number of nuclear weapons and make the world safer.”

“Oppenheimer” became the favorite to win and, out of 13 nominations, left the Dolby Theater with seven statuettes, among the most important: “Best Picture”, “Best Director”, “Best Actor” (Cillian Murphy) and “Best Supporting Actor” ( Robert Downey Jr.). ).

Christopher Nolan has said that he doesn’t like to talk about specific messages in his films because he feels that if a movie is didactic, it tends to not work as dramatically.

But the audience response “was remarkable,” especially because it attracted a young audience that had previously been unconcerned with the issue of nuclear weapons.

“When we make a big movie, we have to believe there is an audience for it,” he said. “But the response from people around the world has far exceeded what I thought was possible.”

The director appeared in the interview room with a statuette in each hand and joked that they were used as weights to train his biceps since they were heavy. “These are the most incredible emotions.

Getting this recognition is the icing on the cake,” he said. “This means a lot to me, it’s a wonderful end to an incredible year.”

“Oppenheimer” also won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Editing.
