The Council of the European Union (EU) this Monday officially adopted legislation on short-term rentals, introducing a unique number to identify online transactions and unifying registration rules.
According to the statement, the EU Council has adopted a regulation on the collection and exchange of data relating to short-term rental housing services.
The new rules, already approved by the European Parliament, aim to increase transparency in the short-term rental sector and help public authorities regulate this part of the tourism sector.
The new rules introduce uniform registration obligations for hosts and short-term rental properties, including the assignment of a unique registration number that will be displayed on property websites and online platforms.
Renting apartments, houses or rooms for a short period has become a common form of accommodation for tourists and travelers. Electronic platforms have increased the use of these services, which now account for almost a quarter of all tourism accommodation in the EU.
The regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU and will enter into force 20 days after publication and will apply 24 months after entry into force.
