River basins in the southern region of Mozambique will begin to recede in the next few hours after the floods recorded in recent days, the Southern Regional Water Resources Authority (ARA-Sul) reported this Saturday.
“Given the meteorological forecasts and the prevailing hydrological situation, the current hydrological scenario is expected to continue over the next 48 hours, characterized by high levels in the Maputo, Umbeluzi, Movene, Incomati, Mutamba, Inyanombe basins, with an overall decreasing trend given the slowdown in rainfall,” – ARA-Sul said in a statement.
In the basins of the southern region of the country, fluctuations in the hydrometric level were recorded with a general downward trend, remaining below the alarm level, the report said.
ARA-Sul notes that no significant rainfall was recorded across the entire hydroclimatological network over the past 24 hours.
The Pequenos Libombos Reservoir recorded a decrease in the filling level, reaching 95.15%, and with a flow of 100 cubic meters per second, the Corumana Reservoir recorded an increase in the filling level, reaching 60.67%, with a flow of 7.43 cubic meters per second. , while the Massingir reservoir maintained its fill level at 72.08%, dropping 18.71 meters per second.
The southern region of Mozambique recorded heavy rain last Sunday, with authorities recording at least four deaths, two injuries and 12,740 casualties, according to preliminary data from the National Emergency Center (Cenoe).
The country is considered one of the worst hit by global climate change, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the monsoon season.
